our project

to get there from here is a choreographic investigation on mapping memories, unfixed, in and through our bodies.  We reflect on the allure and impossibility of destination through mixed media. The stitching together of panoramic videos, movement, and objects animates the tension of never quite arriving while being propelled forward.

Our process charts the physical and emotional landscapes enlivened by auto-ethnographic research where we negotiate inscribed pasts. In this process, Maria traces the erasure and restoration of her Mexican lineage, Nguyen navigates unfamiliar terrains as a refugee, and Kevin wrestles with discomfort and queer pleasure. In our live performance, we embody themes of reunion, transformation, and resilience.

The dance films, material installation, and culminating performance serve as digital and ephemeral archives of juxtaposing identities and experiences, intended to provide a physical space for viewers to reflect on their own subjective journey(s).

to get there from here was presented at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery at Scripps College, August 24-October 9, 2022 with a performance on September 17, 2022 as a part of the gallery installation.

As longtime collaborators, separated by distance, the artists bring the virtual collaboration into a tangible one through an in-person rehearsal process and concluding performance. As social cues and proximity guidelines change, the embodied research responds in real-time to the challenges and potential of creating embodied art together while discoursing on themes of reunion, transformation, and resilience.

OBJECTIVE & IMPACT

The films and performance serve as an empathetic gesture to connect our isolated experiences in a shared space. Viewers will have the opportunity to reflect and enliven the atmosphere through interactive dialogue and writing prompts - expanding its narrative and communal scope while raising critical questions about our evolving identity(s), endurance and resilience. The gallery is transformed into a meditative space for gallery-goers to invest in deep contemplation, a necessary space in a heightened era of intense productivity.
